Why having the best cello strings is so important...
There’s this crazy idea floating about which says if you’re not a professional cellist, indeed a “soloist” at that, you don’t need the very best cello strings. Even if you’re not a high flying soloist chances are you’ve spent 1000s of pounds, dollars or euros to buy your cello. Your bow probably wasn’t cheap either. Then there are cases, repairs & adjustments to worry about. It all mounts up to a heck of a lot of money. So the little things like strings become an easy target for cutting costs.
But why is it crazy? Well, first off, who doesn’t want their cello to sound the best it possibly can? And who’s to say that only “soloists” are entitled to fantastic sound? No-one. Getting the best cello string for your cello represents the single most cost-effective way to improve your instrument’s sound. You could of course change the bridge, sound post, bass bar and lots more. But you can’t guarantee in any improvement. And doing that kind of thing is very, very expensive. But changing your strings is a non-intrusive way at getting a better sound for your instrument that’s so easy, literally, a child could do it.
